One of the highlights for many visitors is an exhilarating marine tour through Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Reserve and Haida Heritage Site. This part of the Islands’ archipelago is awe-inspiring. Additionally, provides an opportunity to explore the sites of historic Haida villages, many of which existing since Raven brought light into the world.

K'uuna Village Site

Along the secluded shore of Skedans Bay lies the south-facing historic village site of K’uuna Llnagaay. Briefly known by its English name “Skedans,” a community of over 700 Xaayda Haida lived on this remote peninsula until the 1880s. Long succumbed to natural decay caused by the lush rainforest climate, the depressions of several longhouses give a sense of their impressive former scale. Remarkably, several carved memorial and mortuary poles remain standing.

Today, inhabitants at K’uuna Llnagaay can be found during the summer months – in the form of Haida Watchmen. These respected Indigenous caretakers (both men and women) monitor the site and share the oral history and cultural traditions of K’uuna with visitors.
